Tiruppur Corporation pins hopes on bio-CNG, waste-to-energy plant to manage municipal waste

A bio-CNG plant to treat 200 tonnes of solid waste a day at a location in Palladam and a regional waste-to-energy plant have been projected as permanent solutions to manage solid waste of Tiruppur City Municipal Corporation in the recent report submitted by Tiruppur District Collector to the National Green Tribunal (NGT), Southern Zone.

The bio-CNG plant is proposed to be built at ₹57.84 crore under Public-Private Partnership, whereas the waste-to-energy plant is proposed to be established jointly with the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation in the next two years.

District Collector Manish Narnaware, as the first respondent in a case filed by environmental activist Satish Kumar on pollution caused by dumping of municipal waste in abandoned quarries in Pongupalayam in Tiruppur North Taluk, submitted the comprehensive status report on how the issue was being handled and the way forward.
