Tirupati cleanliness drive targets Vinayaka Sagar after idol immersion

Tirupati officials have launched a cleanliness drive at the Vinayaka Sagar water body following the immersion of idols during Vinayaka Chaturthi. The initiative is part of a broader 'Swachchatha hi Seva' campaign to encourage public participation in environmental maintenance.
Why it matters
This reflects ongoing efforts in India to manage the environmental impact of religious festivals on urban water bodies.
After the recent Vinayaka Chaturthi immersion ceremony turned the ‘Vinayaka Sagar’ water body shabby, the government chose the tank to be cleaned up as part of the ‘Ek Din Ek Ghanta Ek Saath’ call given under ‘Swachchatha hi Seva - 2026’.
The government identified the Vinayaka Sagar tank for the cleanliness drive in view of the heavily dumped idols, especially those made of Plaster of Paris and painted with chemical and synthetic substances.
The event was inaugurated by Tirupati MLA Arani Srinivasulu, in the presence of Tirupati Municipal Corporation (TMC) Commissioner M. Jayakrishna, Andhra Pradesh Yadava Welfare Corporation Chairman G. Narasimha Yadav, Andhra Pradesh Greening and Beautification Corporation Chairperson M. Sugunamma, Thathayagunta Gangamma Devasthanam Chairman N. Mahesh Yadav and TDP constituency in-charge J.B. Srinivas among others.
