Tirunelveli Corporation outlines its plans to conserve Tamirabharani: no construction will come-up within or close to the river, assures Commissioner

Corporation Commissioner Monika Rana has assured that no civil construction will be made within or near the Tamirabharani as part of the urban civic body’s plans to protect the perennial river supplying drinking water everyday to several lakhs of people in the four southern districts.

When chairman of Palayamkottai Zone of Tirunelveli Corporation M. Francis during the council meeting held on Friday wanted to have clarity on the Corporation’s ‘Tamirabharani restoration programme’ to be implemented on an outlay of ₹59 crore, Dr. Monika said sewage was mixing up with the Tamirabharani at 23 spots as the perennial river flows for about 16 km within the urban local body. Hence, the conservation of the Tamirabharani and its restoration was to be implemented with external funding of ₹59 crore by treating the sewage that seriously pollutes the drinking water source.
