Tiruchi Corporation steps up monsoon preparedness

Tiruchi Corporation has stepped up precautionary measures in flood-prone and low-lying areas of the city ahead of the northeast monsoon.

More than 50 locations have been identified as very high, high, medium and low vulnerability areas. Several parts of the city, including Ariyamangalam, Old Palpannai, Kattur and Tiruverumbur, witnessed waterlogging during heavy rain last year.

Following a meeting convened by the Corporation Commissioner, officials have been instructed to prioritise desilting works in flood-prone areas. Small storm-water drains along residential areas and interior roads are being desilted manually.

Of the 1,420 km of roads maintained by the Corporation, storm-water drains extend to about 800 km. Around 600 contract sanitation workers and 450 permanent workers have been deployed for the desilting and cleaning drive, a senior Corporation official said.
