A four-month-old baby from Tiruchi with a rare congenital heart defect was saved through a life-saving open heart surgery at a hospital in Coimbatore, supported by corporate social responsibility (CSR) funding by a company.
The baby had been in ventilator support in the Government Medical College Hospital in Tiruchi from the first week of August after developing high-grade fever and breathing difficulty. The infant was diagnosed with Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection (TAPVC) in a congenital heart disease screening camp organised by G. Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital (GKNM) in Tiruchi on August 8.
In this condition, the pulmonary veins that normally carry oxygen-rich blood from the lungs to the left side of the heart connect abnormally to the right side, resulting in abnormal mixing of blood and low oxygen levels.
