TikTok says people ultimately responsible for crimes, as tech firms face TDs in wake of M9 crash

TIKTOK WAS GRILLED at the Oireachtas media committee today, with TDs and Senators telling the social media giant that their response is “not good enough”.

“I believe you guys are just off the hook,” said Sinéad Gibney. “Your self-regulating, your community guidelines, your content moderation systems, your significant investment, none of it is working.”

Evanne Ní Chuilinn asked the social media giant, “why can’t you spend money on AI that will refuse to upload the content in the first place”, instead of allowing videos that show illegal content to appear on the platforms.

“You’re failing,” she told TikTok, saying “you need to do better at not letting it be uploaded in the first place”.

Alison Comyn shared the sentiment, questioning the community guidelines referenced numerous times as the protective measures taken by the three companies – TikTok, Google and Meta, who appeared before the committee today.
