'Those opportunities don't happen frequently': Panel calls for changes to NCEA replacement

The co-chair of a panel of education experts is calling for changes to the proposed replacement to NCEA.

The Post Primary Teachers Association commissioned Tirotiro Āno - a panel of teachers, researchers and curriculum specialists - to produce a report on the proposed new secondary school qualifications system.

The panel found there had been a "lack of clarity and certainty around the proposed qualification design and changes signalled for implementation in 2028, and that had affected people's confidence in the proposed reform", Tirotiro Āno co-chair Kate Gainsford said.

The nine-member panel undertook inquiries into 12 aspects of the new system.

An overarching finding of the panel was that partnership with Māori and protection for Te Reo Māori and Mātauranga Māori were important to teachers and school leaders, "and we found that there wasn't really evidence of inclusion of those views", Gainsford said.
