Thiruvananthapuram Corporation to remove unscientific overhead cables

The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has launched an initiative to remove unscientific and hazardous overhead cables across 101 wards. The civic body plans to bill utility providers for the removal process to improve public safety.
Why it matters
It addresses urban infrastructure maintenance and public safety concerns regarding disorganized utility cabling in Indian cities.
The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has drawn up a project to remove overhead cables and telephone/Internet wires that have been put up unscientifically.
A demand to remove such cables had been raised through a resolution passed by the Corporation council earlier. Since the cables, which led to many accidents and even loss of life, had not been removed, the civic body has decided to remove them on its own and seek compensation from utility providers, a statement here on Saturday said.
A plan was prepared at a meeting chaired by Town Planning Standing Committee chairperson Pattoor Radhakrishnan. Corporation councillors, officials of government departments, service providers, and franchises attended the meeting.
The contractors will cut and remove all cables that had not been tagged and clean the rest together using machines.
