The world’s first African games showcase is coming
Origin Point Games is launching a new showcase platform dedicated to highlighting video games developed by African studios. The initiative aims to address the lack of representation for African developers in major global gaming events.
Why it matters
It highlights the growing influence of emerging markets in the global creative economy and challenges the Western-centric nature of major industry showcases.
About a week ago, Nintendo held its prestigious Nintendo Direct and showed off captivating titles such as "Kirby and the World Beyond", from Japanese studio HAL Laboratory, and Metroid Ravenous, from the Spanish studio Mercury Steam. A week before that, Sony broadcast its annual State of Play where the surprise sequel Maneater 2, co-developed by US-based Tripwire Interactive and Demiurge Studios, was announced. A week before that was Gamescom, where during the Opening Night presentation, multiple game trailers were shown including New Zealand's Grinding Gear Games' anticipated sequel Path of Exile 2. These events are brimming with games that seem to do everything, cater to the desires of everyone, and are made by studios and developers from everywhere. Correction: Almost everywhere. Give or take, 54 everywheres.
