The telltale sign Russia's plague scare could be more serious

A mysterious health incident in Siberia involving a deceased technician has sparked international concern and calls for transparency from Russia. Experts warn that the lack of clear information highlights vulnerabilities in global disease monitoring and governance.
Why it matters
The incident underscores the risks of pathogenic threats and the potential breakdown of international health cooperation in an era of geopolitical tension.
The incident has caught global attention, despite the lack of clear information coming out of Russia, and highlighted serious problems with global efforts to monitor disease labs. Leading disease outbreak expert Professor Raina MacIntyre of the Kirby Institute told SBS News that the incident highlights just how exposed the world is to pathogenic threat in an era of fracturing global governance institutions. "The US and a couple of other countries have left the WHO [World Health Organization], so the WHO is no longer a global organisation," she said. "It's got limited remit, and it's got no regulatory or legislative power." "We just have to look at COVID and what happened there." Both the United States and the WHO have called for transparency about the incident in Russia's central-eastern Siberian region last week.
