The rise of free access models across digital platforms
The free tier has quietly become the default entry point of the digital economy. What started as a marketing gimmick for a handful of software start-ups now shapes how Americans watch television, play games, skim the morning headlines, and move their money around. The logic holds across categories that otherwise share nothing: Strip out the price barrier at the door, build a habit, and collect the money later through advertising, premium features, or the sliver of users who eventually decide to pay. Free no longer signals a stripped-down product, and in plenty of markets it has quietly become the main one.Israel offers a compact example of the same transition. Its highly connected population routinely uses global streaming, gaming, social media, and software platforms whose free versions act as the first point of contact.
