The origin of the LPG cylinder

The article traces the history of LPG from its accidental discovery by Dr. Walter O. Snelling in 1910 to its global adoption as a cooking fuel. It also details the evolution of cylinder safety technology and material science improvements.
Why it matters
Understanding the history and safety evolution of LPG provides context for modern energy infrastructure and household safety standards.
T he story of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) began almost by accident. In 1910, American chemist, Dr. Walter O. Snelling, was tasked with investigating “wild” gasoline (American for petrol), which was stored in containers. Due to significant vapour pressure building up, the container’s cork cap was forced out. Snelling realised that some highly volatile gases were at action. He separated and distilled these gaseous components,to identify propane and butane.
