The 154th Open Championship just got wilder. Lucas Herbert made history in Round 2, as did Sam Burns, both carding 62s to tie for the lowest rounds ever in a major championship. But it’s what happened in the our after Bryson DeChambeau that is the headline DeChambeau birdied the 18th to get to 7-under for the tournament. But then, before signing his scorecard, he was informed of a potential rules violation. It happened at No. 5, hours earlier, when DeChambeau drove his ball into the grass. Officials contend that while walking through the tall grass, DeChambeau improved his lie. In a wild scene, DeChambeau and rules officials hopped in a golf cart and made their way back out to No. 5, where a 10-minute back and forth ensued. Ultimately, DeChambeau lost and will be docked 2 shots, going from second place at 7-under to T5 at -5. Herbert, a 30-year-old Australian, went out with a 6-under 28, tying the lowest-ever nine-hole score in the history of The Open Championship. He had a shot at the first-ever 61, but missed a 5-footer for par at 18. Still, it’s a 62, and at 8-under, he has the 36-hold lead. Unbelievably, he wasn’t the only one to shoot 62. Burns did too, and needed a chip-in at 18 to do it. He’s at -5, three back of the lead. But as those two settled into the clubhouse, DeChambeau took to the course and made sure he won’t miss a fourth straight cut at a major this year. DeChambeau followed up an opening round 67 with a 4-under 66, getting him to -7 for the tournament … until the penalty. He and Herbert would have been in the final pairing Saturday. Now it will be Herbert and Jackson Suber. World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler isn’t far behind, grinding his way to a 2-under 68. He’s at 4-under.
