He is the guitarist and keyboardist in The National, one of indie rock's most successful and prestigious acts, which he co-founded in 1999.
At the same time, he was a classically trained Yale graduate who composed and performed experimental music around Brooklyn into the early 2000s.
He has won Grammys for both alternative and chamber music albums, earned a Best Original Song Oscar for Train Dreams, co-written with Nick Cave, collaborated with minimalist masters Philip Glass and Steve Reich, and penned orchestrations for Paul Simon, Bon Iver and Taylor Swift (on albums produced by his twin and The National bandmate Aaron Dessner ).
