The Inside Story: Started at 19 - How Edha Nahdi Built Amsons Into One of East Africa's Biggest Industrial Groups

Edha Nahdi, managing director of Amsons Group, is expanding his industrial conglomerate through strategic acquisitions, including a recent $230 million deal for Oryx Energies' Tanzanian fuel business. Nahdi has grown the company from a small startup into one of East Africa's largest industrial groups.
Why it matters
The consolidation of fuel and infrastructure assets by local conglomerates reflects a shifting economic landscape in East Africa as global firms divest.
Last week Amsons Group agreed to pay more than 230 million dollars for the Tanzanian fuel business of Oryx Energies. If regulators approve, the deal will more than double Amsons' fuel storage, take its station network to about 300 and bring it within reach of the largest fuel distributor in Tanzania. It is the latest in a run of acquisitions led by Edha Nahdi, the group's managing director, who started his first company at 19. This is how he built it.
Amsons was founded by Nahdi's father, Abdallah Munif Nahdi, who began trading in the early 1980s and still chairs the group. Edha, whose full name is Edhah Abdallah Munif, grew up in the business. In 2006, at 19, he started Camel Oil, a fuel importer based in Dar es Salaam.
