Former Springboks head coach Nick Mallett has pinpointed a moment in the defeat to the All Blacks that would have been a dagger to Rassie Erasmus’ heart.
South Africa were defeated 33-16 by New Zealand in the opening Test match of Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry tour, as they managed to score just one try to the All Blacks’ five.
Ill-discipline and wasted opportunities were the Springboks’ two biggest shortcomings, according to Mallett, who bemoaned South Africa’s inability to turn pressure into points at Ellis Park.
He also stated that the All Blacks got more of an impact from their bench than the Springboks did, with the famed Bomb Squad failing to swing the momentum of the game as it has done so often in the past.
