Members of a welfare association of Tharuvaikulam submitted a petition at the Thoothukudi district collectorate on Monday seeking the removal of Prosopis juliflora and sand mounds from a stream near Samathuvapuram to protect the people in the region from flooding during monsoon season.
The petition was submitted at the weekly grievance redressal meeting chaired by District Revenue Officer M. Guruchandran.
The petition submitted by Kamarajar Welfare Association stated that Prosopis juliflora trees had encroached upon a stream near Samathuvapuram in Tharuvaikulam. The petitioners added that waste water from fish processing units had also accumulated in the watercourse.
They further stated that sand mounds had blocked the passage at the coastal estuary and as a result of that, rainwater could not flow through the watercourse during the monsoon, causing flooding in Tharuvaikulam and affecting the residents.
