Texas teen's rain barrels save 45K gallons, wins $10K hero prize

A discarded food-manufacturing drum might not look like the beginning of an environmental movement. For 17-year-old Kaitlyn Tran, however, those unwanted containers became rain barrels, canvases and tools for protecting one of Central Texas’ most important water sources. The Cedar Park teenager founded Rain Barrels for Runoff to tackle stormwater runoff in the Texas Hill Country, where steep, sloping terrain can send contaminated water toward local waterways and the Edwards Aquifer. What began as a practical project has since grown into a youth-led environmental effort that has retained more than 100,000 gallons of stormwater and earned Tran national recognition, states the online report by CBS Austin website.In 2026, Tran was named one of the Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes winners, an honor recognizing young people making a significant difference in their communities or the environment.
