This highlights the risks of decentralized, community-led software development and the lack of oversight in creator-led digital projects.
The team behind Calamity , a hugely popular Terraria mod which began development in 2016, has announced that “the mod’s future development is halted until further notice.” This follows allegations against its lead developer for “actions endangering minors” and unpaid compensation of “several thousand” dollars to the mod’s dev team.
As originally covered by GamesRadar , the entire development team behind Calamity, other than its owner and lead dev, Ozzatron, announced on August 10 that they are collectively “ceasing all development” of the decade-old mod due to its “irrecoverably tainted reputation.”
According to one of Calamity’s lead devs, Mrrp, who shared the news on the mod’s official Discord server, Ozzatron was removed after the team allegedly saw “solid evidence of their actions endangering minors on Discord.”
