Why it matters
The article highlights the intersection of international sports performance and the complex business side of professional football transfers.
After contributing two goals and two assists in his last three appearances for Nigeria, Terem Moffi is hoping to continue his impressive run in national team colours when the Super Eagles take on Portugal in another friendly match next Wednesday, PUNCH Sports Extra reports. Moffi was on target for Nigeria in their 2-2 draw against Poland on Wednesday evening, finishing a well-worked move after being set up by Moses Simon to give the Super Eagles the lead. In the absence of star striker Victor Osimhen, Moffi has been trusted to lead the line in Nigeria’s last three matches. He started as captain during the Unity Cup campaign in London, where he provided two assists for Femi Azeez’s brace in the 2-0 win over Zimbabwe, before getting on the scoresheet in the final against Jamaica. The 27-year-old now has six goals in 22 appearances for Nigeria and hopes to add to that tally when the Super Eagles face Portugal next week at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa in Leiria. “Obviously, when I play football, I try to score as many goals as possible. Against Portugal it will be difficult, but I will try to do my job as well,” Moffi told UbuntuPitch. We played really well but we didn’t get the victory. There are lots of positives to take home.” As he continues to impress coach Eric Chelle on national team duty, Moffi will also be hoping to resolve his club future once the international window closes. The 27-year-old is currently at a crossroads in his club career, with Porto unwilling to pay €8m to make his move from OGC Nice permanent. He joined Porto on loan from Nice amid uncertainty surrounding his future at the Ligue 1 club and is now expected to return to France after the Portuguese side declined the option to sign him permanently.
