Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. ordered increased military patrols across the country's maritime areas, including the Pacific Ocean and Philippine Rise, after Chinese scholars claimed that Batanes belongs to China.
The National Security Council and the Armed Forces of the Philippines rejected the claim, stressing that Batanes is an integral part of the Philippines and warning that false narratives should not be allowed to create doubt over Philippine sovereignty.
Chinese scholars argued that Batanes is a "natural geographical extension" of Taiwan, a claim that Philippine officials described as disinformation and part of a "salami slicing" strategy to gradually justify future expansionist actions.
