Teodoro: Any forcible action against BRP Sierra Madre an 'act of war'
Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. warned that any forcible action by China against the BRP Sierra Madre would constitute an "act of war" against the Philippines while clarifying that it would not automatically mean a state of war.
Teodoro said invoking the Philippines' Mutual Defense Treaty with the United States remained a possibility but stressed that the decision rested with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
He rejected Chinese claims that Manila needed Beijing's permission to conduct resupply missions, following the AFP's successful operation to Ayungin Shoal on Oct. 21, after a previous mission was suspended due to Chinese interference.
