Collector Ranjeet Singh on Thursday ordered the closure of Boganallur garbage yard, where Tenkasi and Kadayanallur municipalities dumped waste generated under their jurisdiction.
The decision was taken after inmates of the Boganallur Sri Lankan Tamil refugees rehabilitation camp submitted a petition with the Collector on Monday, seeking closure of the garbage yard that posed serious health hazards to the camp. Two ’ residents, a 13-year-old girl and a 27-year-old woman, who were suffering from a ‘mysterious fever’, died in the past 30 days, they said.
Following the deaths, which were allegedly caused by dengue according to the families of the deceased, Mr. Ranjeet Singh paid a surprise visit to the camp on Thursday to check the complaints of the residents. He also met other residents living near the garbage yard.
