Telangana to procure 5,800 MW renewable energy to meet high demand

The Telangana government has launched a major renewable energy procurement program to secure 5,800 MW of power. The initiative includes solar, wind, and battery storage projects to meet the state's rising electricity demand driven by industrial and urban growth.
Why it matters
This initiative highlights a significant shift toward sustainable infrastructure and private-sector-led energy security in a rapidly developing Indian state.
The State Government has initiated a renewable energy procurement programme through Telangana Renewable Energy Development Corporation Ltd (TGREDCO) and Telangana Power Generation Corporation Ltd (TG-Genco) to ensure reliable, affordable and sustainable power supply to meet Telangana’s rapidly growing energy demand.
According to the officials, the tender documents will be released for procurement of a diversified renewable energy portfolio comprising 3,000 megawatt (MW) solar power integrated with 6,000 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), 800 MW wind power, 2,000 MW renewable energy round-the-clock (RE-RTC) power and 2,000 MWh FDRE BESS.
Stating that the peak electricity demand in the State has already reached 19,892 MW, the officials said it is expected to increase significantly in the coming years as the State is witnessing accelerated economic growth driven by industrial expansion, urbanisation, development of data centres, electric mobility, irrigation requirements and major infrastructure projects.
