TDB Eyes New Fertilizer Project in Ethiopia, Chief Says

The Trade and Development Bank is planning a new fertilizer project in Ethiopia to boost regional agricultural production. This initiative aligns with broader African efforts to reduce reliance on imported agricultural inputs.
Why it matters
Increased domestic fertilizer production is critical for food security and economic development in Ethiopia and the wider African region.
The Trade and Development Bank is eyeing a new fertilizer project in Ethiopia as part of a pipeline of regional investments in energy, aviation and agricultural inputs, according to Admassu Tadesse, the bank’s president and chief executive.
The chief executive mentioned the planned Ethiopian project while discussing the bank’s pipeline of investable cross-border projects at the launch of the World Bank report, “Integrating Africa: From Threads to Hubs”. He did not disclose the project’s name, investment value, location or expected timeline.
“There’s one coming up here in Ethiopia,” Admassu said, referring to fertilizer projects the bank is considering as part of a pipeline of large regional projects.
The multilateral lender has already committed 100 million US dollars to a fertilizer project in Angola, according to him, distinguishing the investment from the Ethiopian project, for which he provided no financing details.
