TDB employees union stage protest

The Travancore Devaswom Employees’ Union held a protest against the Travancore Devaswom Board regarding the appointment process for the Sabarimala head priest. The union claims the board bypassed traditional norms to favor specific individuals.
Why it matters
The protest reflects ongoing tensions between religious administrative bodies and employee unions regarding transparency in traditional appointments.
The Travancore Devaswom Employees’ Union on Monday (October 5, 2026) accused the Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) of bypassing established norms to favour persons with vested interests in the appointment of the Sabarimala melshanthi (head priest).
The union staged a demonstration outside the TDB headquarters, demanding that the traditional appointment procedure be followed.
Vishnu Mohan, MLA, inaugurated the meeting while the union State president Puthumana Manu Namboothiri presided over the meeting. General secretary Chavara S. Lalu welcomed the gathering, while UTUC national president A.A. Azeez delivered the keynote address.
