Tayebwa seeks stronger Commonwealth support for Uganda's Parliament

Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has called for stronger cooperation between Uganda and the Commonwealth to improve parliamentary accountability, trade, education and regional peace initiatives.
Mr Tayebwa made the call on Wednesday after welcoming Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey to Parliament during her first official visit to Uganda.
Ms Botchwey is in the country from October 7 to 9 as part of engagements ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2026.
The discussions focused on strengthening parliamentary democracy, good governance and institutional capacity, including digitalisation, oversight and benchmarking among Commonwealth legislatures.
Mr Tayebwa said Parliament would benefit from increased opportunities for MPs to learn from other Commonwealth countries, particularly on the use of technology to improve parliamentary processes.
