Tata Sons board approves fresh five-year term for Chairman Chandrasekaran

The board of Tata Sons has approved a new five-year term for N. Chandrasekaran as executive chairman, reversing his previous decision to step down. The reasons for this sudden change in leadership plans remain undisclosed.
Why it matters
As the head of one of India's largest conglomerates, Chandrasekaran's leadership continuity is a major factor for the Indian economy and corporate sector.
The board of Tata Sons reportedly approved a fresh five-year term for N. Chandrasekaran as executive chairman, a source familiar with the matter said on Thursday (September 17, 2026), reversing his decision last month not to seek reappointment.
The reasons for the change were not immediately clear, the source added.
Mr. Chandrasekaran, whose current term ends in February 2027, said last month he would not seek another term. The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, which controls 27.9% holdings in Tata Sons, had then accepted his resignation and initiated process to search for his successor.
