Deep beneath the hills of northern Tanzania, near the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro, a gemstone was found whose journey began with a stroke of chance.
Tanzanite, found in a small area of the Merelani Hills near Arusha, remained unknown until 1967, when Maasai tribesmen are said to have led people to deposits of this blue stone. It was later brought to public attention by Manuel de Souza. Then, it was Henry B Platt, vice Ppresident, Tiffany & Co., who named the stone tanzanite after Tanzania. That little-known mineral caught the attention of jewellers and gemologists, ultimately making its mark in the international luxury market.
