Tanzania: Dar port maintains lead against peers in efficiency

Tanzania’s main port, Dar es Salaam, continued to top its East African peers in the World Bank Container Port Performance Index (CPPI), highlighting a shifting competitive landscape along the East African coast as shipping disruptions and infrastructure constraints reshape regional cargo flows.

Tanzania’s main port rose to position 255 globally, from 360 in the previous ranking, while Mombasa dropped to 396th, from 375. Meanwhile, Lamu Port, which was not ranked in the previous edition, entered the index at 345th, putting it ahead of Mombasa.

The changes come amid major disruptions to global shipping caused by insecurity in the Red Sea and wider Middle East, which forced many vessels to reroute around the Cape of Good Hope. The World Bank stated geopolitical disruptions have contributed to congestion and operational inefficiencies at ports, although the effects have varied significantly between facilities.
