Why it matters
This signals a strategic shift in African economic development, focusing on long-term industrialization and infrastructure connectivity with international partners.
Dar es Salaam. Tanzania has invited Japanese investors to participate in major infrastructure projects, including the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), ports, airports and urban transport, as it seeks to shift economic ties with Japan from development assistance to investment and industrialisation.
Minister of State in the President’s Office—Planning and Investment, Prof Kitila Mkumbo, made the call during meetings with Japan’s Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Mr Manabu Nagai, and a member of the Japan-Africa (Japan-AU) Interparliamentary Friendship League, Ms Inoguchi Kuniko, in Tokyo on Tuesday.
Prof Mkumbo is in Japan from September 7 to 18 as part of an investment promotion tour aimed at attracting Japanese capital and technology to Tanzania.
He said the country wanted to build on its longstanding relationship with Japan by expanding cooperation in investment, industrialisation, technology transfer and economic co-creation.
