Tamil Nadu adds 950 MBBS seats for 2026-27 academic year
Tamil Nadu will add 950 MBBS seats for the 2026-27 academic year, bringing the state's total to 13,999. The expansion includes new medical colleges and increased intake capacity at existing government and private institutions.

Tamil Nadu will add 950 additional MBBS seats across government and private medical colleges for the 2026-2027 academic year, according to the National Medical Commission’s (NMC) latest seat matrix for the undergraduate course (as of July 13). This increase will take the total number of MBBS seats in 78 colleges in the State to 13,999.
The State now has the third highest number of MBBS seats in the country. Karnataka leads with 15,395 seats followed by Uttar Pradesh with 14,000 seats.
The seat matrix released by NMC includes approvals granted by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) for establishment of new medical colleges as well as increase in intake capacity of existing medical colleges, it said.
