ST. LOUIS — In case anybody needed a reminder of golf’s fickleness, Thursday’s opening round at Bellerive provided another sterling example just how quickly things can change.
Four days removed from a dominant trek to the winner’s circle at TPC Southwind , Scottie Scheffler carded a 2-over 72 at the BMW Championship. He was tied for 44th, ahead of just three other players.
It was far from Scheffler’s sharpest outing of the year — one that saw the pre-tournament favorite make four bogeys in a five-hole stretch on the front nine.
His health might have played a large role in his performance. While Scheffler didn’t talk with the assembled media following his round, The AP reported that he sounded hoarse and said he was sick as he headed to the locker room.
