T.N. Social Welfare Department issues guidelines for selection of support persons in POCSO Act cases
The Tamil Nadu government has released new guidelines for selecting and training support persons to assist child victims in POCSO Act cases. These support persons will be managed by the District Child Protection Unit and will provide specialized assistance during legal proceedings.

The Tamil Nadu Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Department has issued guidelines for the selection and duties of support persons for victims of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act cases.
According to the guidelines, the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) has to maintain a pool and database of support persons for POCSO Act cases selected through applications. The guidelines also notified that an official of a children’s home or shelter, a person employed by DCPU, a person working in child rights organisation are eligible to be a support person. They have to be atleast 25 years of age to qualify for the selection.
“The DCPU will invite applications every year through a public advertisement. Police verification is part of the process. The applicants will then be called for an interview,” the guidelines stated.
