Why it matters
This reflects state-level welfare policies aimed at social empowerment and financial support for marriage expenses among economically disadvantaged groups.
The Tamil Nadu government on Monday issued an order allocating ₹812 crore in the first phase for the Annan Seer scheme, under which eligible brides will be given eight grams of gold and a silk saree.
Women from families with an annual income not exceeding ₹2.5 lakh will be eligible for the scheme.
The order, issued by Pallavi Baldev, Secretary, Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Department, said detailed guidelines for implementing the scheme would be issued separately. The gold and sarees would be procured in accordance with the Tamil Nadu Transparency in Tenders Act, 1996. The price of gold would be based on the rate fixed by the Indian Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA), it said.
