T-cell responses to ancestral SARS-CoV-2 and Omicron in unvaccinated hospitalised adults living with and without HIV in South Africa
A study of hospitalized adults in South Africa found no significant differences in SARS-CoV-2-specific T-cell responses between HIV-positive individuals on antiretroviral therapy and HIV-negative individuals. Both groups showed effective cross-reactivity to the Omicron variant regardless of their prior infection history.
Why it matters
This research provides reassurance that HIV-positive patients on effective treatment can mount robust immune responses to COVID-19 variants comparable to the general population.
