Systematic disposal of garbage collected from trains sought

The Tamil Nadu Consumer Protection and Environment Research Centre is calling for the systematic disposal of waste collected from long-distance trains. They argue that current dumping practices near tracks and waterbodies pose significant environmental and health risks.
Why it matters
Proper waste management in public transport is critical for environmental sustainability and public health in densely populated regions.
The Tamil Nadu Consumer Protection and Environment Research Centre has sought proper and safe disposal of garbage/food waste collected from the long-distance train coaches.
In a resolution passed at the annual general meeting held in Tiruvarur recently, the centre said the food and other garbage collected from the passenger trains were dumped along the railway tracks, forests, and waterbodies located near the railway stations/tracks.
Pointing out that this endangered the lives of animals and as well as affect the environment, the Centre urged the Southern Railway to adopt segregation of waste at source and subsequent disposal of the same in a safe manner.
Southern Railway should direct the contracting firms engaged in cleaning and maintenance of passenger rail coaches to segregate the waste collected and properly disposed. It should ensure proper mechanism for safe disposal of wastes at important railway junctions/stations, the resolution added.
