Suspension verdict handed down after controversial incident in Roosters' NRL grand final win

NRL player Kalyn Ponga avoided a suspension following a controversial high tackle during the Roosters' grand final victory over the Knights. The match review committee issued a fine instead of a ban, sparking debate over the consistency of officiating and player safety protocols.
Why it matters
The decision impacts player availability for the upcoming World Cup and highlights ongoing concerns regarding head-contact rules in professional rugby.
James Tedesco thought Kalyn Ponga should have been sin-binned. Image: Getty/Channel 9 The NRL match review committee has handed down a solitary charge from the Roosters' win over the Knights in the grand final. And it stems from what proved to be the most controversial incident of the match.
The Roosters won 19-18 against an incredibly gutsy Newcastle team, who seemed to be outmatched all night. The Knights benefited from a controversial decision to let star fullback Kalyn Ponga stay on the field after a high shot on Victor Radley in the 25th minute.
Ponga hit Radley flush in the face with his shoulder with forceful contact, which would normally be a sin-bin even though Radley fell into it. It looked a similar incident to the one that saw Ponga sent off in State of Origin 1 .
