Suspected meteor sightings reported across North Island for second night

Residents across New Zealand's North Island have reported sightings of bright fireballs and meteors for two consecutive nights. Experts have confirmed the sightings, which were accompanied by loud booms and glowing trails.
Why it matters
Frequent meteor sightings provide rare opportunities for public engagement with astronomy and atmospheric science.
New Zealand’s skies have lit up for a second night in a row as skygazers report more suspected meteor sightings.
Experts confirmed on Tuesday night a fireball meteor had raced across the North Island sky , with reports of a very bright flash followed by thunderous booms.
Then last night from 8.30pm meteor sightings were again reported from across the North Island, including by skygazers in Auckland, Taranaki, Central Plateau, Bay of Plenty and Manawatū.
One South Aucklander posted to a local community Facebook page they had seen a flash of light while walking up their driveway.
“It looked like a shooting star but after the flash it was still visible for about five seconds,” the person wrote - begging others to confirm the sighting as the rest of their household was questioning their sanity.
