Supreme Court likely to hear Rahul Gandhi, other Oppn. leaders’ plea against ECI decisions over SIR
The Indian Supreme Court is expected to hear a petition from opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and other politicians challenging the Election Commission's recent electoral roll revisions. The petitioners allege arbitrary power usage and seek transparency regarding the deletion of millions of voters.
Why it matters
This case highlights significant tensions between the Indian opposition and the Election Commission, raising concerns about the integrity of the democratic electoral process.
The Supreme Court on Thursday (October 15, 2026) is likely to hear a petition by the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, along with other leaders of Opposition parties, seeking a judicial examination into the alleged arbitrary and unilateral exercise of power by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar in the conduct of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The writ petition also sought action against police action on the October 10 anti-CEC protests.
On Monday (October 12, 2026), Mr. Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders moved the top court seeking a complete disclosure of “files, agendas, minutes, notings and objections” recorded by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi on the SIR process, which has so far led to the deletion of about 13 crore voters from electoral rolls across India.
