Supreme Court hands Trump a rare loss on transgender prison care policy

The U.S. Supreme Court has blocked a Trump administration policy that sought to restrict hormone therapy and gender-affirming care for transgender individuals in federal prisons. This ruling serves as a temporary legal victory for advocates of transgender rights within the correctional system.
Why it matters
The decision highlights ongoing legal battles regarding transgender rights and the extent of executive authority over federal prison medical policies.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday blocked President Donald Trump from suspending hormone therapy and other treatments for transgender Americans in federal prisons, a rare win for transgender rights at the conservative high court. The court handed down a one-sentence order that did not explain the decision. “This is a critical ruling for our clients and all transgender people in Bureau of Prisons custody,” said Li Nowlin-Sohl, a senior staff attorney with the ACLU’s LGBTQ & HIV Project. “The denial of medically necessary health care, including gender-affirming health care, to people in prison is a violation of their fundamental constitutional rights. We will continue to defend the rights of our clients and all incarcerated people.” The Justice Department didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
