Supermarket owners shouldn't make the rich list - supplier

New Zealand is probably one of the only countries in the world where owning a supermarket can put someone on the rich list, a grocery supplier and distributor says.

Daniel Shields, owner of Naked Kitchen and Barrys Bay Cheese, as well as fresh chilled distribution company Cool & Fresh, spoke to Midday Report on Thursday.

He said breaking up Foodstuffs , as National has proposed, would be one of the most efficient ways to get more competition into New Zealand's grocery sector.

"It would force Pak'n Save and New World into competition with each other. At the moment, that relationship is very, very cosy.

"Foodstuffs commands the top and bottom position in grocery, they can take margin out of New World and volume out of Pak'n Save without either of their store owners being desperately penalised... it's given them so much control over New Zealand consumers."
