Super Typhoon Champi is approaching the Philippines, bringing heavy rain and potential flooding to several regions. PAGASA expects the storm to intensify before eventually exiting the area by the weekend.
Why it matters
Timely weather warnings are critical for disaster preparedness and public safety in regions prone to tropical cyclones.
The trough of Super Typhoon Champi (international name) is expected to bring rain over three areas, posing a risk of flooding and landslides, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Tuesday.
In its 4:00 a.m. weather advisory, PAGASA said scattered rains and thunderstorms are expected in Catanduanes, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar due to Champi’s trough.
PAGASA warned of possible flooding and landslides during moderate to occasionally heavy rains.
Super Typhoon Champi was last located 1,605 kilometers east of Central Luzon as of 3:00 a.m. Its strength slightly intensified, packing maximum sustained winds of 195 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 240 kph.
