Sudan: Informal Interactive Dialogue
The UN Security Council is holding an informal interactive dialogue to discuss coordinating international mediation efforts for the ongoing conflict in Sudan. The meeting aims to translate various international peace commitments into a coherent, civilian-led path forward.
Why it matters
Sudan's civil war has created a massive humanitarian crisis, and the lack of coordination among international mediators has hindered progress toward a lasting peace.
Tomorrow morning (14 September), Security Council members will hold an informal interactive dialogue (IID) on the situation in Sudan , titled “From Principles to Practice: translating international mediation commitments into a coherent, civilian-led path to peace”. The meeting is being organised by Denmark and the UK (the penholder on the Sudan file). The expected briefers are the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Sudan, Pekka Haavisto; the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) High-Level Panel on Sudan, Mohamed Ibn Chambas; the Special Representative of the European Union (EU) for the Horn of Africa, Annette Weber; the Director of the Horn of Africa and Sudan Department at the League of Arab States (LAS), Zeid Al Sabban; and the Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Workneh Gebeyehu.
