Suburban train derails near Fort railway station; Chennai Beach-bound services hit

A suburban train derailed near Fort railway station in Chennai, causing temporary disruptions to services on the Beach-Chengalpattu section. Restoration work was completed within a few hours, and train operations returned to normal by the afternoon.
Why it matters
Infrastructure reliability is critical for urban mobility, and this incident highlights the operational challenges faced by public transit systems in high-density regions.
A suburban train derailed near the Fort railway station on Monday (October 5, 2026) morning, leading to services along one stretch of the Beach-Chengalpattu via Tambaram section being affected.
The electrical multiple unit (EMU) train proceeding from Chengalpattu to Beach was stopped after one set of the wheels of the seventh coach derailed near the Fort railway station around 10.30 a.m.
A senior official from Southern Railway said an accident relief train (ART) was deployed immediately and the maintenance staff were engaged in restoration work on a priority basis.
However, the derailment that occurred on the Beach-Chengalpattu via Tambaram section did not affect the other line, where train services continued normally. A few incoming trains bound for Beach were stopped at the Park and Egmore railway stations and operated towards Tambaram, he added.
