Why it matters
The arrest of a political party leader highlights ongoing tensions and legal challenges surrounding land disputes in regional India.
Jayankondam police on Friday arrested four persons, including Tamizhar Needhi Katchi president Subha. Ilavarasan, on charges of interfering in a land dispute and attempt to murder.
According to police sources, there was a land dispute between the families of Rajavelu and Thambusamy of Kallathur. Ilavarasan had allegedly interfered in the land dispute and mediated in favour of Thambusamy. During the process, supporters of Ilavarasan allegedly beat up Rajavelu and his family members. Aggrieved over it, Rajavelu lodged a complaint with the Jayankondam police.
