Stewart Island kiwi spotted in daylight alongside children on school run
Three children walking to school on Stewart Island, New Zealand, had a rare encounter with a wild kiwi bird during daylight hours. While kiwi are typically nocturnal and elusive, they are more frequently spotted on predator-free islands like those surrounding Stewart Island.

For three youngsters on Rakiura / Stewart Island this week, it also involved a close encounter with one of the country’s most iconic birds.
A photo shared by Halfmoon Bay School shows three children walking to school while a wild kiwi strolls nearby in broad daylight.
“Best walking to school moment and only on Rakiura / Stewart Island experience of the week goes to these three boys and the kiwi that joined them,” the school wrote on Facebook.
The heartwarming image quickly attracted hundreds of comments, with many New Zealanders saying they had spent years hoping to see a kiwi in the wild.
“That’s a broad-daylight experience nobody else on the planet gets ... doesn’t get any more Rakiura than that,” said one commenter.
