Steve Borthwick has been offered a contract extension to include the 2028 Six Nations as the Rugby Football Union (RFU) attempts to remove any doubt about his position as England 's head coach.
However, the limited length of the extension – effectively just four months – can hardly be regarded as a ringing endorsement of Borthwick's tenure and suggests that his future will be determined by England's performance at next year's World Cup in Australia.
Ireland, by contrast, offered Andy Farrell, their head coach, a four-year extension to his contract in June to ensure he remains in place through to the 2031 World Cup.
