Why it matters
The establishment of a new governing council is critical for the institutional stability and academic integrity of a major national university.
THE Minister of Education, Dr Sanet Steenkamp, has inaugurated the University of Namibia’s (UNAM) Council, which will be responsible for providing strategic direction, ensuring good governance and overseeing the institution’s affairs.
“As Council, your role is to provide strategic leadership, sound governance and effective oversight, while respecting the important distinction between governance and management,” Steenkamp said, speaking at the inaugural meeting.
She explained that the Council must provide direction, safeguard the integrity and sustainability of the institution, oversee the responsible use of resources, monitor performance and hold management accountable. However, she added, the University’s management must also be given the authority and space to manage the University effectively within the powers properly delegated to it.
