State seeks detailed plans from local bodies for road safety projects under ₹275-crore scheme

The Tamil Nadu government has sought detailed project reports from all municipal corporations for three categories of road improvement works as per the 2026-27 budget announcement.
The projects include safe access to schools, improvements to traffic islands, and people-friendly streets. A scheme proposes ₹110 crore for these works in Chennai and other municipal corporations, according to a communication dated October 7, which was accessed by The Hindu .
The communication from R. Sukumar, Municipal Administration Joint Director, said the projects would be implemented at an estimated cost of ₹275 crore, as per the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department’s 2026-27 budget announcements.
